Bearing Witness, is an exhibition of recent work by acclaimed Irish artist Philip Moss, opening at Hunt Contemporary.

In Bearing Witness, Philip Moss invites us to look beyond technique and subject matter to consider the ideas, decisions and struggles that underpin the creative process. The exhibition brings together a powerful body of work exploring personal and collective memory, conflict, injustice and the complexities of the human experience.

Moving between deeply personal experiences and defining moments in modern history, Moss responds to subjects ranging from childhood trauma and institutionalisation to war, displacement, discrimination and political and social upheaval. Often drawing on historical events, film, music and the work of other artists, he uses painting as a means of questioning how we remember, respond to and sometimes turn away from difficult histories.

At once personal and political, Bearing Witness reflects Moss’ approach as a conceptual artist who chooses to paint, placing the idea, and the questions it provokes, at the heart of the work.
