IMMA acquires major work by Gabhann Dunne

To celebrate Earth Day the Irish Museum of Modern Art announced the recent acquisition of the compelling work 'Crossing the Salt' (2018) by Gabhann Dunne to IMMA’s Permanent Collection. A composite work of 100 paintings, it captures a variety of bird species that swoop and dive mid-air, creating an exhilarating and dynamic experience.
The title of this work, Crossing the Salt, refers to the migratory habits of birds in crossing the sea to arrive in Ireland. Speaking about the work Dunne notes, ‘I wanted to do something about migrating birds, I’ve been reading about them and the problems they have. It’s the same with people crossing the Mediterranean and the dangers they face.’
This work was donated to IMMA as a Heritage Gift under section 1003 of the Taxes Consolidation Act. This is an important mechanism that enables individuals or businesses to donate important artwork or collections of artworks to the National Collections in a tax-effective manner. This has been instrumental in the growth of IMMA’s Permanent Collection.
