London Art Fair: Helen Blake & Sean Molloy

21 - 26 January 2025

The Molesworth Gallery is taking part in the London Art Fair from January 21 to 26, 2025, showing new work by Helen Blake and Sean Molloy. Contact the gallery for complimentary passes to the fair.

Helen Blake is a virtuoso painter whose practice focuses on colour, engaging with rhythm and formalism, chance and deliberation. Using a working method where process and contemplation guide the evolution of the work, her overtly hand-made paintings record and examine colour conversations within accumulating pattern structures, embracing accidents, flaws and discrepancies within their rhythms.

Sean Molloy's key concern is to investigate the relevance of painting in a digitally-mediated world, while also embracing the role of chance in the making of the work. The digital elements overlaying a series of traditional baroque-inspired themes draw on a variety of sources (CGI, games, image manipulation software, glitch-art etc.). Molloy refers to these concealing elements as pentimenti.

Together, Blake and Molloy's work offers a fascinating dialogue on the enduring role of the artist - and the hand of the artist - in a world where images and image-making have been co-opted by technology, both as a tool and progenitor.
